I've regularly used Greyhound from BOS to NYC. There is very stiff competition with several Chinese-operated companies so you can usually get one way tickets for $10-$20. For downtown to downtown it takes about the same time as flying, is much cheaper and less hassle.

I don't think any money could pay me to go coast-to-coast on a bus. My bus tolerance level is about 3-4 hours.
