I agree that taking the train out of NYC probably is a good option, but before doing so, it's certainly worth comparing the prices of renting in Manhattan versus the cost of the train and the rental car in Providence or elsewhere. In terms of the driving and traffic, yes it can be nasty getting out of Manhattan, but it often isn't; it obviously depends on when exactly the OP is planning on making the trip.
