Do lack of bags raise alarm bells with TSA?

I'm considering doing a MR soon, but would rather pack light (a laptop in my backpack ought to be sufficient.) Does travelling with little or no luggage raise alarm bells with TSA?

Also, with those who have been questioned by TSA, do they tend to understand the concept of Mileage Runs? What's the best way to explain it to them?
