And exactly the same arguments hold firm for the other contender for the 4-engine long-haul operations - A340. And the only other semi-modern aircraft that may be identified as 4-engine, the BAe146 really isn't a 4-engine aircraft at all .... it flies with 5 APUs rather than 4 engines.
Not much point in equiping with an aircraft type just for one specialist routing. In today's financial climate that would be a sure way to lose money. The 777 in its multiple variants is a very capable aircraft to support AA's long-haul international operations.
