When I was in college during the 90s, several of my friends endured ~40 hour trips on "the Hound."
In one instance that I remember pretty well, my friends and I were on a road trip and one guy decided he wanted to make a beeline for SoCal when we were in Denver.
In spite of the fact that my interest in airlines was just as fervent then as it is now, the process for locating cheap fares was much more cumbersome, and it should go without saying that we didn't have cell phones, let alone wifi. So, I was unable to locate any reasonably priced flights (cheapest was at least 3x bus), and I wouldn't have dreamed of spotting him miles because they were difficult to accrue.
Fast forward 15+ years, and its entirely different ballgame.
Current case:
Leaving tomorrow, Denver to Los Angeles
Hound = $114
United = $210
Southwest = $199
