I'd be surprised if very many people (or rather, anyone) actually go transcon on those things. From what I assume, it would take forever to do that with all of the transfers and whatnot. I'm not sure how their fare structure works today, but the last time I checked on it (early 90s maybe) the fares just compounded by segment. So if you were going from Memphis to Chicago via Saint Louis, you'd more or less be paying MEM-STL and STL-CHI.
