I, too, have had this same error happen close to 5-6 times. It's so bad that out of frustration, I just booked a ticket on United.
It may be true that you only have to manually enter your credit card number, but what frustrated me even more was that there didn't even seem to be anyone I could talk to about the error--and the error message itself said that if it was a web-only fare that agents would be unable to book it. VERY frustrating! Please fix this!
