Exactly. Depending on how much disruption a missed connection would cause, you might want to do something else. For example, I booked a ticket from STL-ORD-PVG today. AA offered me a 60 minute connection at ORD. It would be a major problem for me to miss the only ORD-PVG flight and have to wait a day, so I opted to take a STL-ORD an hour earlier, getting a 120 minute connection.
