A hotel that is a bit different (boutique feel) but not necessarily luxury, that I really like, is Thompson LES. Their king studios run about $300/night and are quite nice. Fun pool, too.

Also, On the Ave on the UWS has very night penthouse loft rooms with their own balconies. Sometimes these are available for the low 300s.
