This sort of mode normally only comes up if you're booking a complicated routing that involves multiple changes.
My guess is that whatever database the flight information comes out of is having problems and this mode has been used to reduce the number of requests it gets for information. Given how desperate they normally are to promote the lowest prices in month X I'd be very surprised if this is a permanent change
