It isn't just airlines, it is airports. I have not had much trouble domestically but actually more on UA than AA. The real problem is international and some plane types (767s for one). A 22 inch bag will absolutely be a problem internationally. I would stick with an 18 - 20 inch bag with the smaller being preferred.
