I'm considering an award ticket ORD-LIM. Can I route this via SFO, such as ORD-SFO-MIA-LIM (going back either the same way or directly LIM-MIA-ORD)? Or is SFO too much out of the way, and therefore not allowed? Is there any link that discusses award routing rules?

If the routing is legal, can SFO be the stopover point? BTW, does AA allow 2 stopovers? I know that anything less 24 hours is not considered a stopover on international itins.
