... I read this as you implying that aa.com is well-behaved, whereas it isn't, if you book the turnaround trip as multi-city and select "by schedule". I've just done a dummy booking for a random day in August: BA8111 out (arrive AMS 09.20) and BA 8112 back (depart AMS 10.10). USD 636.80 in restricted CE (D class).
Of course, the OP wouldn't get the shareholder discount, so fair point. In that case, split ticket is fine, as (at AMS at least) it is impossible to miss the "connection" given the layout of the airport.
