You should always request the upgrade. Otherwise you take yourself out of the running. A new consideration for Golds is that they are automatically placed on the upgrade list at the time of purchasing a ticket - before we had to check a box. I am not sure if this same feature is being provided to MVP's - if not, please make sure you request the upgrade.
