Will that cause any problems? I'm trying to grab a few days in Shanghai in mid-sept but my visa expires on sept 18. Should I go through the hassle of getting another visa (and thus delaying my trip) or will I be ok if it expires while I'm in the country?

Is 18 Sep the date printed on your visa? If so then it is simply the date by which you must enter China. Once you enter China you can stay for 30/60/90 days depending on what is printed on your visa.
For example, if you have a visa that allows 30 days per stay which expires on 18 Sep, then assuming you enter on the 18th, you will be allowed to stay until 18 Oct.
