Thanks Chris for the explanation. Its a little more clear to me now.

Humm maybe I should just buy a sim card in China and then buy another one when I get to HK towards the end of my stay.

Do you know if sim cards are just as readily available in China as they are in HK? I'll be with a tour so it might be hard to go "shopping" for a sim card.
