If you want something more classical, the Royal Hawaiian might work for you, although feedback on the Halekulani (a short walk away) has been uniformly positive on this forum.

If you want an intimate getaway, I wouldn't choose Waikiki. The most idyllic resort in Hawaii is the FS Hualalai ... and for a taste of Hawaii before the developers invaded, you might consider 4 days at FS Manele Bay (with 4th night free) + 3 days at FS Lodge at Koele (with 3rd night free), if you get the dates right.
