Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki
Has anyone stayed at this Starwood property before and if so, would you recommend? I'm thinking of surprising my girlfriend with a week-long vacation in the fall since she'll be moving to Hawaii to study for 3 months and I'd like to visit. I'm looking for any feedback or advice... we prefer classic luxury and period architecture to resort style or ultra-mod chic hotels. I'm looking for an intimate getaway that offers the same top luxuries and ameneties with culture and grace if that makes any sense.
I realize it probably doesn't exist anymore, but I imagine being transported to an exotic 1950s (pre-jet/condo/high-rise) Waikiki, sipping mai tais in the barefoot bar of some Polynesian themed dinner lounge... though a well-maintained to date property is just as important. What's the closest we can come to old fashioned Hawaiian five-star luxury on the island? I want something more than just a huge fancy rectangular building on the beach.
Thanks!
