Any relaxation effect from taking a vacation would be more than negated by the stress and usual lack of sleep on a red-eye flight, particularly as one will not be getting a normal 7-8 hours of sleep on that flight... I do not mind red-eyes on a transoceanic flight, since there is time for a full night's sleep, but certainly not on a Hawaii flight to the West Coast.
Just returned on AS871... a redeye. It wasn't as bad as I thought
And was great to have that much more time in Hawaii with a departure at 9 PM (enough to see the sunset, and get a bite to eat prior to boarding).
Morning departures add the expense of another hotel/condo room for no real net-gain
Plus the added bonus of having greater A/C utilization ^^
