The red-eyes from Hawaii are not an Alaska Airlines thing...virtually every airline (UA, DL, etc.) has at least one red eye from Hawaii...I'm no fan of a red-eye, but I'd much rather have an extra day in Hawaii than wake up early, run to the airport, and spend all day flying home.
It also allows the airline better aircraft utilization, resulting in lower CASM, which in turn allows a cheaper ticket price, and allows a service like BLI-HNL to exist in the first place.
