Care to say where are you flying from? NYC,SFO,LAX? It makes a difference to me, namely one less stop for CX if it is NYC. Also consider OZ (Asiana), their Y seat basically is the same 34" pitch to UA 744 E+, but nicer IFE and I don't think price wise is that much different than UA and CX.
On UA, I would fly YOW-IAD-NRT-BKK on a 777. With Cathay, I would fly YOW-YYZ-HKG-BKK. I will be flying home from Hong Kong (bought a ticket on Air Asia from Phuket to HK).
