Might be wrong but my gut reaction based on the use of "fight" for the thread description is that the tone was not conducive to reaching an agreement.

Been there done that. Unfortunately more than once. Agree they are expensive lessons and do wish that I was not such a slow learner.
If in fact it turns out that the policy was a later check out time was allowed than I would pursue it without "fighting"
