A brief review of dinner at La Fonda last Saturday.

Location: Not too far out of the way and actually very well located vis a vis a great Microbrew pub The Tap Room) in Takeshita Dori.

Décor:

The good: Well designed space with many little corners and sp[aces for guests on two levels. The layout appealed to me.

The bad: The wall hangings of plastic vegetables was a bit cheesy though. And the Mariachi band is nothing short of thoroughly irritating. Odd song list, too loud and who wants a band playing in their ear when trying to converse.

F&B: Menu was trilingual and very well laid out offering courses and a la carte.

The good: Extremely good Green Tomato sauce. Shrimp was excellent. A very reasonable Mole as well. In general, the flavors offered, were what I have come to expect (as a Californian with a lot of exposure to Mexican food) as quite acceptable.

The bad: Chicken in enchiladas that was overcooked. Extremely cheesy cookie cutter shaped servings of rice. Minimal, at best, servings of beans. Minimal usage of cheese on dishes described as smothered in it. The food overall had absolutely no real spice characteristics and if you like your Mexican food to have a bite you will be left wanting. There was no selection of salsa offered to add flavor if one so desired.

Portions: A mixed bag. The enchiladas were generous, the Mole chicken was meager. The shrimp average. Did not leave hungry by any means though.

Note on napkins: We were provided one paper napkin at the beginning, as opposed to cloth. This is not an inexpensive place so one would expect at least cloth. And in Tokyo, Oshibori are expected (but were not offered).

Service: Average at best, and in terms of Tokyo standards, abysmal. Little to no floating of staff to watch for needs, and the staff on hand were an odd mix of westerners and Japanese. The Westerners were largely incapable of answering questions in English that were not set up as simple yes or no questions. One has to wonder why they are there in the first place since the level of service from Japanese usually far exceeds that of the western folks hired at many restaurants in Tokyo.

Price Performance: two drinks and three main dishes for the equivalent of $115. I have lived here long enough to know that in terms of Japan prices this is not even close to crazy expensive, but I have also eaten Mexican food for long enough to know that it is usually considered far more of a value equation than this price offers.

Overall: I would recommend this place if you need Mexican food. It is an actual need for many of us west coast sorts. Far better than anything else in Tokyo (although I am very keen to try the place recently recommended up thread).

In terms of how it stacks up to what you can find in the Bay Area (which is possibly unfair for people from other parts of the US) it would be a middle of the road place at best and likely not even get a second look with all of the competition there.

In summation, I am glad I went and would return for the flavors if not the service. Great for a “Mexican Food Fix” and very likely for parties. Not a date place as Mexican food is heavy and simply not very conducive to post dining endeavors of the amorous sort.
