There are various other reasons why web check-in won't work. For example, it won't work if the name on the ticket doesn't exactly match your AAcount name. Has she used it in the past, aside from upgrading? Tech support has no idea about web check-in, so take what they say with a grain of salt.

This morning I went to check in my wife (also EXP) for a flight and was given the message system error, and told to check back. Tried it several times, and finally called Tech Support at AA.com. I was told, that because the ticket was booked in one class - even though it had confirmed upgrades 100hrs ago - she could not check in on the web - system wouldn't allow it. In looking back at several threads - it seems others were able to check in on the web even with upgrades - does anyone know what's really happening. IMO if this is true that you can't check in on the web when using a segment upgrade - the value of the system is deminished. BTW - I have plenty of segments in my account. Thanks in advance for the thoughts. Flying out on Saturday with a confirmed upgrade to meet her - would sure like to use web check in.
