I have the crew 8 22" and the "real" L is between 23.25 and 23.5 from end of wheel to top of handle....because of this I plan to return it and order the 20x 16x9 wide body to see if I can get away with it. actually the Crew 8 22" does fit in overhead bins just fine. it's just a typical airline requirement to be no longer than 22". i believe they set it at 22" for the fact that they know wheels will take up an extra inch or so. or else they would make the requirement 24" but then the wheels would make it 25" and it would never fit and cause all sorts of problems
i've never had a UA rep make me check the bag, but of course on Embraer or CRJ-700 UA Express i've had to do that along w/ everyone, but the Crew 8 wheeled business tote fits in the overhead on both of those Express jets.
