Holiday chaos for passengers at Gatwick as baggage handling machines break down

Thousands of passengers waiting for summer holiday flights were faced with delays today when baggage machines broke down at Gatwick Airport.

Up to 40 departing flights were delayed by as much as four hours following the problems which affected belts moving luggage from check-in to departure areas.

The problems will prove embarrassing for Gatwick Airport Ltd, in its first summer season as owner of the business after BAA was forced to sell it last year.
