You have the calendar year in which to achieve elite status. Once achieved, it is effective immediately and you will keep your status through the entire next calendar year plus one month (expires at end of January). If you make 1K, you'll get 6 SWUs in January that are good through the following January - you may also be able to get some SWUs earlier if you need them and have already qualified for 1K. Counters reset at the beginning of each year.
