Please note that only the miles you actually fly, plus some special promotions, count toward Elite Status on United. The ones you earn using the affiliated credit card are good for upgrades and free flights, but don't count towards your status with the airline.
Your status is good until the end of the calendar year. You simply add miles to get to higher status levels, no "restarting".
