On United in order to upgrade for free you would have to reach 100,000 EQMs on order to receive SWUs which can be used to upgrade most fare classes for free. However you wouldn't receive any free upgrades internationally at any status level on most airlines. On United however you would be eligible for automatic upgrades on domestic flights and as a Premier exec you would have a pretty high upgrade percentage.
