It's a good deal on alcohol whether coming or going to the U.S. For example, I've bought a bottle of premium gin for about $8 that would be $28 in an American store. There are a few other good deal, but I agree most everything else is a ripoff. My wife has seen cosmetics and commented that she could get them cheaper in the store.
