Unhappy JFK Lost / Stolen luggage

Hello everyone

I checked two pieces of luggage at JFK on Thursday. When I arrived in Nice, there was no luggage on the carousel.

My flight itinerary was KLM from New York - JFK to Amsterdam, connecting to another KLM flight from Amsterdam to Nice.

The people at lost luggage have only been able to locate one of the two bags with the other one listed at "untraced/no information".

My flight from JFK to Amsterdam was delayed which meant that I missed my connecting flight, and had to wait in Amsterdam for a later connection - which might explain the mislaid luggage, but it does not explain why one bag has been unaccounted for.

I have a sickening feeling that the missing piece was stolen at JFK because I had, at the last minute, packed an old laptop into it.

Can anyone on this forum help me to think through this: Should I give up on the second bag as irretrievably lost / stolen, or is there some hope? And if there is some hope, is there something that I can do to increase the chances of recovery?

thanks
