Question about skipping a part of itinerary

Dear FT experts:

I remember reading in here that airlines do not like it for you to skip a part of itinerary and sometimes they will drop the rest of the itinerary on you if you did that. I want to confirm if that is true.

I bought (through TA) JFK-HKG-PVG-PEK-PVG-WNZ-HKG-JFK flights. The question is regard to the WNZ-HKG-JFK (last 3 portion.) I want to leave 2 days earlier from WNZ-HKG (China Eastern, bought with Cathay ticket) but the chances for me clearing waitlist is slim (according to my TA), so I may just buy another ticket myself (with any airlines that has a seat.)

But this would mean I "skipped" the originally purchase ticket, would CX drop me on my final leg: HKG-JFK?

Thanks
