Won't work. The bag check is assigned to a ticketed pax, in this case you or your wife. The child is not ticketed, ergo no bag can be checked on her account, status or not. Do you have a DL Skymiles Amex card? You get a free bag if you buy the tickets with that.
It is my understanding that it does not matter if you purchase the ticket with the Delta AMEX or not, as long as you can provide it at time of check-in you get one free bag per ticketed passenger. I have not checked a bag since this promotion has come out, so am not positive.
