I don't think there is any industry standard. B6 and CO don't allow mileage accrual on the extra seats, to my knowledge.

Okay, I think we might be talking about two different things. The posts above yours were specifically talking about two passengers booking three seats to have a guaranteed empty middle seat. Your post suggested you couldn't book more than 2 passengers on one PNR for an award ticket, which is not true. You even mention 3 Y seats vs. 2 J seats; I can't imagine one passenger ever needing to book 2 J seats.

It seems you may have veered off slightly from the discussion and are talking about one passenger booking three seats to have a whole row and a flat-bed. (Though I still don't get the 2 J seats comparison.) Per the link you posted, I agree that you can't do this on an award, but it does seem you can do this on paid tickets.
