Just some background for you. Actually, I think you;ll find plenty of examples whereby Mods actually do notify members of post changes with explanations, but not all. That is always not because they would not like to, it's really a function of time and priorities. You identify that they are volunteers. Yes they are, volunteers who often have many of the same priorities that most members of FlyerTalk also have, and that is jobs, family, personal lives and of course, the rule-buster ... travel.
Based on your post, I looked up in the admin control and to date for the year, our volunteers have taken 58,289 actions according to the log file. These range from stamping out spammers to moving posts, editing threads and more. This does not count any of their normal posts, including any warnings they make include in a regular thread, etc.
That's a lot of work by these volunteers. Based on a 24-hour clock since the beginning of the year, that's an average of 279 actions daily. A lot for a small volunteer group.
While I understand that this is about mistakes that Moderators make, I'm wondering if following your same line of thought that our members from time thought about asking a volunteer Moderator for some advice re: a post or topic before posting. You've never seen a post or thread that begins with "I don't know if this really belongs here but feel free to move it if it doesn't." I see these quite often and always think ... would have really helped if the member is unsure where the post/thread really lies, to ask first. This really helps our members since others don't have to use RBP to alert the Moderator it may be in the wrong place and as well, create confusion as to where the thread went, etc.
We have some Moderators that have the pure pleasure to have time to answer each and every one of these situations, others, have more demanding work and personal lives that just don't allow such possibilities. Should we only appoint volunteers who have the ability to dedicate more than 20 hours per week on FT for the purpose of being able to answer any and all queries and situations. I'm surely not going to ask that question. I begin with the idea we already on in debt to these members for whatever time we can get from them, and remember, it's not about this type of time. Moderators often have to reduce their own personal time to enjoy FlyerTalk in the same manner you do in order to assist other members. Speaking for myself, I average 30+ hours a week on FlyerTalk, almost all exclusively devoted to the task of admin and behind the scenes work with our members. Rarely it seems do i get many opportunities to participate in threads as a general member any more. But that's cool because I wouldn't trade the one-on-one i get with members in private.
So, while I totally agree with you -- it would be great -- I wonder just how much we can really ask a volunteer.
And while I can see the situation of your post, I'm really not sure that it was as "arbitrary" as you think it was. I'd hope our volunteers aren't that careless in their functions. Likely it was a judgment call. Sounds like they called a ball a strike. I'll ask the Moderator to take another look at it.
Appreciate the ability to add a few stats to the picture and also remind our members that FlyerTalk is a really, really busy place and that despite actual examples like this that are missing a followup to an action, it is always the best intent to try and do so, though it will likely never be 100% doable.
Thank you.

It would be nice if the Mods actually PM the poster and let them know why they are yanking a post so the poster has a chance, even post action, to figure out why the post was pulled. My post did not violate ANY of FT's TOS, yet it was decided arbitrarily to be yanked without ever leaving me at least a PM to explain.
The benefit is this way the poster would KNOW what part of TOS he/she has violated. As it stands, the mod yanks the post without ever explaining anything. I have to say although I understand moderators are volunteers and do us all a favour by donating their time, this would reduce their workload in the long run by hopefully preventing the same mistake from happening.
