Why? If it fits in the overhead lengthwise, it takes up no more space than a bag 1" shorter. And "because that's the rule" doesn't fly with me.

I am guessing if they are checking mine they are also cracking down on folks lugging things which are obviously too big to fit or extra carryon's.
