You CAN transfer them to upgrade a companion you're flying with. I just bought 300 upgrades. Am I crazy or what? After doing this, I realized that I also got (300 x 31.25) miles from my Citicard for buying them and another (300 x 31.25) platinum ticket bonus miles for burying AA "tickets" on my Citicard. So I paid $9,375 for the upgrades and also got 18,750 miles. Now if upgrade prices keep going up and I live long enough maybe it makes sense.

RS, Welcome to Flyertalk!

If only you had waited a few more weeks to discover this site, then you would have saved yourself nearly ten grand !

I quess to each his own. My paramount concern is international upgrades. I could give a hoot about NYC-MIA. The bulkhead or exit row suits me just fine. I would NEVER pay for stickers. In fact back when, AA allowed you to trade them batches of 4 for 10,000 FF mile, I ALWAYS WITHOUT fail elected this option.
