I agree with your review of the "new" ORD. I only noticed the EXP checkin after I waited in line for the kiosks. I would love it if AA could get their Rent a Security girls to send non elite/First passengers packing from the line since I agree that many of the people in line with me did not qualify based on the posted sign, but I watched the agent pass people through without raising an eyebrow or even reminding people that they don't belong in the line.
