I can remember back in the '80's taking an Eastern airlines flt.ORD-LAX for an extremely low fare.It was advertised as a no frills flight ,no comp.meals or snacks,yet you could purchase snacks on board and you could NOT check any luggage as this flight was used mainly for cargo...ONLY carry-on...can't remember what type of aircraft,yet remember plane was only economy and there were only about 20 rows of seats with the remainder of the jet blocked off for what I presume cargo...flt.left ORD around 3am and arived LAX around5am or so...
