I'm leaning towards trying this for my Christmas trip back to NY - if fares work out in the < $400 range, it's about the same to get an extra seat both ways as to pay for the 12 500 mile upgrades each way. Not nearly as nice J, but the surety of an empty middle seat would be a lot better in some ways than the "will we get an upgrade or not" mystery.
I've done this on JetBlue several times. An empty middle seat with 34" of pitch is almost as good as First Class (on DL, this was JFK-SLC) at 1/3 the cost. @:-) At least one of those flights (a redeye) we had the only empty seat next to us. ^
