I also like to start with Kayak to get a ballpark price and figure out who flies the route. From there, I'll do some more shopping around such as checking individual airline sites (some airlines like Southwest don't show up in search engines at all). I also like to check the mileage run forum here for any creative/cheap routings that might be availible.
