You could certainly purchase a changeable ticket, that wouldn't charge you any change fees. These are often multiples of the cheapest ticket, though.
True, the problem, as you say, is that the changeable tickets are prohibitively expensive. I average a single change per itinerary, meaning that my tickets effectively cost an extra £100, whereas buying a changeable ticket would increase the per-ticket cost by £500-1000.
