My follow up question pertains to typical security clearance time at LAX Term 7 on Monday nights. I've had mixed experiences at LAX - from 2 1/2 hours on a Friday morning in Terminal 4, to 10 minutes on a Wednesday night in Terminal 5, to an hour in TBIT a few years ago for Qantas.
For people who have done the LAX to SYD flight on United recently (839 I think) (I really wish actually the mod hadn't moved this, but on the other hand perhaps i should have posted both questions simultaneously) how long does it take you to clear?
I find the Car Park entry quicker to clear than the Terminal 6/7 entry for the late Sydney Flight.
Basically at Terminal 7 Check in area use the escalator to go up one level and you will be at the entry security point.
As someone who smokes, I often use this security checkpoint when I want to go out for a quick smoke. It can range from Zero people to 10-15 people. Most who are professional flyer's and know the procedure for clearing security quickly.
I wouldn't use it early afternoon as I've seen the queue out over the bridge.
If it is busy, then you can always try the Terminal 6/7 Security checkpoint, but having status I find only puts you at the front of the line and you still need to queue up behind everyone else after the passport check, many who are infrequent flyer's and take so long.
