I assume that was the intention. I'm not sure how you'd deal with the names -- the Y seat would have to have the correct name of the passenger for FF credit. And then I'm not sure how you'd "prove" that the XTRA SEAT up in F was yours.
I think waitlisting for an upgrade would be an easier and lower-cost option.

The problem with doing this is that you are not guaranteed the seat you reserved. For example, if you booked aisle, booked the "XTRA SEAT" middle for you, and booked your wife in the window, if there is a downguage you will retain the "XTRA SEAT", but your wife could be in another row. There is no way to associate the "XTRA SEAT" with two passengers, AFAIK.
You can just book 3 passengers on one PNR -- husband, wife and extra seat. That way, the odds of being split up are probably negligible.
