Personally, I never book the extra legroom seats - much prefer two or three back.

They are definitely not always the first to go.
On Monday I was ticketed for a flight 75mins before departure - then issued BN 363.
I had an exit row seat and there was a spare seat beside me.
But this was not a long-haul flight.
