Yeah, I've been burned on a couple of occasions arriving just past the T-60 cutoff. It's wound up costing me the change fee to go on the next flight and nervous moments watching the upgrade queue after losing my confirmed seat.
Now I try to arrive at T-2h as well. I don't entirely mind, however. BA's GF lounge makes for a decent place to wait.
