The numbness cost me the ability to get to my destination five hours earlier -- flight I wanted was initially full with lots of seat requests but ended up clearing all standbys and some nonrevs.
Some fares explicitly prohibit standby (while allowing SDC). Did you check your fare rule?
It's boiler plate in all fare rules since standby was eliminated for general flyers.
Phone agents checked and said no routing or rule restrictions in the fare prevent standby on the particular res.
Later in the day I noticed the kiosk offering some options but at that point wouldn't have made dinner at destination so no point in standing by forba middle seat.
One agent later mentioned waitlists are sometimes closed off but I have seen longer lists than what I saw on the gate screen. A phone agent I spoke with was also a gate agent and said that was untrue.
Who knows...all I want us for every agent to be trained to physically try rather than say no without even looking.
