Otherwise, just go to the transit hotel and check-in. The luggage will stay in lost and found in the secure area before the exit from customs. You then have two choices, go to the transfer desk within the secured area and request that they retag the bags for your LH flight. The alternative is pick up your waiting bag(s) and clear customs. Recheck at LH.
I leave bags until the morning on most of my visits to SIN.

Side note: there is paid storage for bags if you want to leave bags at the airport and explore Singapore.
I can confirm that too. Since flights from the U.S. arrive after midnight, I have often not claimed my luggage until after 7:00 a.m. Your luggage will stay around the baggage claim area, don't know if it's lost and found. I can't imagine UA and LH not having interline baggage agreement, since they are not only in star alliance, but are also major airlines. United can check your bags through to the final destination, in which case you won;t have to claim your bags in SIN at all.
