I don't know where you friend lived, but where I live in Italy, drivers stay in their lane and respect red lights. Saying that Italian drivers don't respect rules is, IMO, a stupid cliché.
There's just one thing that is not always respected: speed limits, but this is due to the ridiculous limits on some streets.
