Given the vast range of styles and decor of the rooms at the Carlyle, do you feel that it's sort of taking a risk when booking? I assume at least, that this hotel would be much more willing to accommodate and appease it's guests if a room were not to our liking?

Again, I'm jumping between these choices as they are being offered through Jetsetter and right now, I cannot afford to spend full price ($450-650) for standard rooms on this trip.

Based on your advice however, I take it you'd rather stay at the Carlyle (given that the Mark would not be one of the options, hah)?
If I try to understand what you are looking for by reading your comments, I would say try the Carlyle. The first categories, if you have a renovated one, are nice (nothing extraordinary but nice) but I like the public areas of the Carlyle whch are much more for you I thing. Elegance, lively atmosphere, cosy atmosphere. If you have a good deal, take it
